Our Story

THE SEVEN SISTERS

For untold generations Ballardong Noongars have been part of this boodja, connected to it. This connection is in our hearts, in our hands, in our souls. In honouring our elders we acknowledge our connection to culture, spirit, connection to moort.

Landmarks in Ballardong Noongar country were formed in the dreamtime, great granite outcrops which the Wadjalas call Mount Stirling Bruce Rock, Wave Rock, ochre pits, and life giving gnamma holes, rivers and streams. Our song lines tell the tale of the Seven Sisters who created as they were chased across the country only to end each day leaping to safety amongst the stars. This Seven Sisters story is part of our story, and possibly the oldest or one of the oldest continually told stories on Earth. It is a story told in many lands by many peoples and may be 700,000 years old.

As we sit under the stars we remember...

Hospital

The Badjaling Hospital was built in the 193os so our women might have privacy when giving birth to our children. The old hospital is no more, but we remember it and the tough times the community went through, also the people we have lost. Our elders are committed to improved local health services for Ballardong Noongars. With partners like Community Vision we are working together to make this dream a reality.

BALLARDONG COUNTRY

We are connected to this land, our country, Ballardong country. For untold generations it has nurtured us in its beauty and sometimes its harshness. This land has long memories, way longer than the infamous 'rabbit proof' fence which still runs across country.

THE MISSION SCHOOL

The Mission School in the early 193os provided the chance for education when we were otherwise segregated out of state schools. Local farmer John Kickett's decade long struggle to see his daughters given an education was not successful, but changes through his courage and determination saw his granddaughters attend the Quairading State School. Life was often tough but the community remained strong together connected to country, family and culture. The joy and enthusiasm from our children inspires us all.

FAITH

THE UNITED ABORIGINES MISSION

The United Aborigines Mission with teacher Wilfred Douglas and Missionaries Miss Belshaw and McRidge lived and worked closely with the Badjaling Community. They brought religion to the local community and from the 1930s there has been a vibrant and ongoing connection to faith. There was the Badjaling Noongar Mission, then the International Four Square Church at Yotin& Local Badjaling Elder Murray Van-an is a church pastor. We have seen too much suffering, and lost many loved ones but remain connected in our care for each other.

This book has been put together by Ballardong Noongar elders with the assistance of Community Vision. It contains images of community members who have passed away. We are indebted to the Ballardong Noongar families who helped us with photos of our history on country since the early 1930s. We honour the elders who have gone before us and celebrate connection to country, connection to culture and connection to family and kin.

Thank you to the State Library of Western Australia for giving us images of our families from their Badjaling Winmar collection for this book and community exhibition, and additional thanks for "Storylines", the great service where Noongar families can access family memories that would not otherwise be possible. We thank the Shire of Quairading for access to images of local community events over the years.

A special thanks to the Community Arts Network (CAN) for its continuing support of our community. CAN has many gifted photographers who have provided images for this book. We thank them all and hope we have been able to properly acknowledge their work.

The running of community workshops, family outreach and local exhibitions was supported by the Department of Communities.

Finally, we thank Community Vision for supporting us and our ongoing work together. Ballardong elder Murray Yarran and Ian Thompson from Community Vision have co-ordinated this project.
